You are setting off on the most important journey of your life! Your bags are packed, you’ve got everything you need. You know it’s going to be long and you’re prepared for that. It might be bumpy at times but you know it’s also going to be fantastic too. You get to the station and board the train, you get a comfy seat and look out of the window. Only one problem …….. you don’t know where it’s going! You were so excited about going on the journey that you didn’t stop to work out the destination!

The train is Life and so often we set off on a journey to achieve great success, but if we don’t know where we’re headed how can we expect to get there?

Setting goals is a very important thing to do. It works for your personal life as well as the professional, and it doesn’t take long. Put aside 10mins, half an hour or an hour to sit down with a pen and paper or your computer, I still quite like writing it in a note book (old school style). Think about what you really want. This is for you and you don’t have to show it to anyone or even tell anyone about it, so think about what you’d really like your life to look like and where you want your train to go. Start with one year, then 5, then 10 years.

If it’s easier, start with your personal life. Be specific, how many kids, grandkids, cats, dogs? What kind of house, how many bedrooms? How many cars? What kind of cars? How many holidays a year would you like to have? Remember this is all about you and no-one is judging you!

So now you know what you’d like your personal life to look like. Great, isn’t it! Next have a think about your work life. To have all those lovely things, how much do you need or would you like to be earning? Where do you want to be working? Do you even want to be working? Again do the 1, 5 and 10 year goals. Be really detailed about where you want to be in your career. Will you be running your own business, running more than one business, the head of a big company?

Now you know where you want to go, how are you going to get there? The strategy is just as important as the goal. Take each one,one at a time. So in 1 year I want to be here………. How am I going to get there? What do I need to do? What do I need to learn? Can I do it on my own or do I need help? Then do 5 and 10 year plans too. Birds flying

Now you have your journey, destination, and a plan to take you there! Life can be tricky and no one can predict the future but if we at least have a rough idea of where we’d like our future to go, we might be able to just get there.

Good luck for your future, and enjoy the ride!
